Football, Friendship and a School in Nepal — The Story of Nepal Cup

At The Perfect Underwear, we donate 10% of every sale to rebuilding schools in Nepal. But behind that number is a story worth telling — a story about friendship, football, and a promise made after one of the worst natural disasters in modern history.

It started with one man's story

Nepal Cup was founded by a group of mostly Danish football players based in Shanghai, China. One of the team's longest-serving members is a Nepalese man named Kanchha. He was in Nepal on April 25, 2015, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the country. In the weeks that followed, Kanchha spent his time doing charity work among the devastation.

When Kanchha returned to Shanghai and shared what he had witnessed with his teammates, they knew they had to do something. That decision became the Nepal Cup — a charity football tournament played in Kathmandu, now in its 4th edition.

The scale of the destruction

The 2015 earthquake, followed by a second major quake on May 12th, left a trail of devastation that is almost impossible to comprehend. Almost 9,000 people lost their lives. Around 23,000 were injured. Half a million homes were destroyed. And thousands of schools — the foundations of entire communities — were reduced to rubble, leaving 1.5 million children without a place to learn.

In the most remote mountain villages, many of those schools still haven't been rebuilt. Children attend classes in the open air, through monsoon rains and freezing winters.

Football as a force for good

The Nepal Cup is a 7-aside football tournament bringing together 12 local and international teams in Kathmandu. What makes it truly special is how it's structured: all costs of hosting the tournament are covered by the players themselves, meaning 100% of every sponsorship and donation goes directly to school construction. No administration fees. No overhead. Every dollar reaches the children who need it.

Since the first tournament in 2015, Nepal Cup has raised more than $125,000 and successfully completed three schools — Gaurishankar Higher Secondary School, Siddheswari Secondary School, and Tellok Higher Secondary School. The goal for Nepal Cup 2025 is to fund a fourth: Amarpur Secondary School in northeastern Nepal, a school with 204 students and 19 teachers currently working in buildings described as “dilapidated and not suited for teaching.”

The total cost of rebuilding Amarpur Secondary School is $116,500. Nepal Cup aims to raise as much of this as possible.
